Richard Jiles Dunklau age 93, passed peacefully on Friday November 24, 2023 at St John’s hospice surrounded by his loving family at bedside.
Richard was born March 1, 1930 in Norfolk, Nebraska and grew up in Lincoln Nebraska, attending Lutheran primary schools, Lincoln high school and graduating from university of Nebraska with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1954. He then served his country as a lieutenant in the US Army for two years. After discharge from the Army he began working in the manufacture of mechanical and electromechanical products with a resume too long to list, however, his last position was in Decatur with Climate Control and he retired in 2010 at the age of 80.
His work was interesting and took him on numerous trips to Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France and England. He spoke some German he learned from his grandparents as a child, and always lamented that this knowledge helped very little on his work travels.
Richard had a private pilot license, gave blood to the Red Cross regularly and was a member of Blue Mound Lions and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rochester.
He loved car engines and was a fan of NASCAR, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Nebraska football and volleyball.
Richard’s love for learning never waned and he could often be found engrossed in a good book or engaging in intellectual conversations with friends and family. He was an avid reader of history and was currently reading about the American revolution. In his free time Richard enjoyed being outdoors tending to his garden, home improvement projects, bicycle rides, taking the various family dogs for a walk and just sitting on the porch swing in the evening with Jennifer with a cup of coffee.
In later years, Richard enjoyed attending his grandsons various sports, band concerts, art displays, and piano recitals. He very patiently baited hooks, untangled fishing line and retrieved hooks and bobbers from tree branches when the young boys were learning to fish.
Richard leaves behind his beloved wife Jennifer of 45 years, daughter Katherine Dunklau of Santa Fe NM, son Scott Arends(Nikki) of Springfield, daughter Kimberly Arends -Brewer( Steven) of Chatham and three grandsons Lucas Arends of Springfield, Jack Arends of Springfield and Maxwell Brewer of Chatham. Brother in law Mark David ( Monica) of Savoy il, brother in law Woody David (Cindy) of Mt Zion, il, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by father Clarence Dunklau and mother Hildegard Koehn Dunklau of Lincoln Nebraska, son Thomas Dunklau of California, Marcia (Kerr) Dunklau of California ( mother of Thomas and Katherine), sister Sheila Dunklau Ballaine (Dave) of Bainbridge Island, Wa, brother Ersten “Bud” Dunklau (Carol) of Lincoln Ne.
Richard was a true gentleman who loved his family with all his heart, and will be fondly remembered for his unwavering kindness, wisdom and wit.
Burial will be at Camp Butler with military honors on Wednesday December 6, 2023 at 2pm
In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests any donations to Land of Lincoln Honor flight, or St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
