Philip Weber Obituary

Philip W. Weber, age 78, of Dawson, Illinois, formerly of Collinsville and Springfield, passed away on March 31, 2023, with family at his side.  Philip was the loving husband of wife Marcia, devoted stepfather to Adam and Graham Nicholson; loving brother of Don W. Weber (wife Catherine), and cherished friend and mentor for many during his life and years of public service. He was preceded in death by his father, Norman J. Weber, and mother, Dixie Vandergriff Weber.

Philip was born May 12, 1944, at Robert E. Lee Memorial Hospital in Marion, Virginia and learned to ride a horse and shoot a gun before the age of five.  He began his formal schooling in Collinsville, graduating from Collinsville High School in 1962.  He attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, receiving his B.A. in Russian with honors in 1966, and went on to earn his Juris Doctorate cum laude from the St. Louis University School of Law in 1970.  For several years he practiced law in Madison County, serving as Assistant Public Defender and Assistant States Attorney.

In 1977, Philip moved to Springfield.  After working one year in the criminal division of the Office of the Illinois Attorney General, he began a long and storied career on the Senate Republican staff, where he retired as Chief Legal Counsel and Research Director in 2003.

Philip had a passion for history, particularly Russian history and the political history of the War Between the States.  Aside from history and politics, Philip loved photography, canoeing, and the beauty of nature, never failing to point out a hawk or vulture (or chemtrail) traversing the skies.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew him well.
