Roy Andrew Gundy

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Roy Andrew Gundy, 71, of Springfield, died Monday, July 27, 2015, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Jan. 11, 1944, in Decatur, Ill., to Thurman Gundy and Florence Edgecomb and was raised by his grandmother, Elva Edgecomb. He married Roxanna "Roxy" Schmidt on May 28, 1997.

Roy worked for State Farm Insurance from 1968-1975 and was an officer for the Bloomington Police Department from 1975-1978. He graduated from the Illinois State Police Academy in February of 1978 and began his career in District 10, Pesotum. He retired as a Master Sergeant, Air Operations Bureau, in October 2001. After retiring from the ISP he worked as a Resource Officer at Glenwood Middle School until 2011.

Roy was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Retired State Police Association, and the State Employees' Retirement Systems.

Roy's passion was playing the trumpet. He was a member of the band, Bert and the Starfires, from 1964-1975 and they produced an album. He enjoyed music, including Big Band, playing slots, boating, Western movies, especially John Wayne, keeping up on Fox News, and eating dinner out and having a "good" steak!

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandmother, Elva Edgecomb; and cousin, Delores Edgecomb.

He is survived by his wife, Roxy Schmidt-Gundy; one son, Troy (Julie) Gundy of Decatur; one daughter, Julie (Tim) Bowden of Marshfield, Mo.; and two grandsons.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at Wilson Park Funeral Home in Rochester. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the funeral home with the Rev. Craig Sweet officiating. Burial will follow at Rochester Cemetery.
