Obituary

Robert (Bob) Glenn Lockeby, 93 of South Jacksonville, IL passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on February 13, 2022 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.

Bob was born to Barney and Celestia (Austin) Lockeby on March 26, 1928 in Desoto, IL.  He is survived by his wife, Karen Ann (K.A.) of 58 years, daughters Linda (Robert, deceased) Braner, Jodi (Steve) Baum, Garnalee Pearce, Denise (Brion) Kauffman and Vicki Jo Lockeby.  He has 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John Henry, and two sisters, Berneice Mileur and Mary Alice Vaughn.

Bob had a wonderful work ethic and a love for his country, which led him to enlist in the Merchant Marines in 1945, during World War II.  Following his service, that same work ethic led him to becoming owner of two bowling alleys – one in Chicago and the other, the Community Bowl in Pleasant Plains, which was his pride and joy for nearly 25 years and through which he forged countless life-long friendships.  He had various jobs after the Community Bowl was lost to a tragic fire in 1988, notably working at the Edgewood Golf course in Auburn, IL and as Sales Account Manager for Auto Glass Systems in Springfield, IL until retiring at the age of 83. Retirement didn't settle well with Bob, so he went back to work part-time at Buchheit's in Jacksonville, IL until he was 91 years old.

He was proud to have received his honorary high school diploma, joking he was the oldest graduate of the class of 2001 from Carbondale High School.

A master storyteller, Bob was known for his fun-loving, ornery, adventuresome spirit, even celebrating his 80th birthday by sky diving for the first time. He contributed in many ways to the community of Pleasant Plains where he wholeheartedly cared about the people that lived there and in the surrounding communities.  He enjoyed supporting the PPHS Cardinals, especially the basketball and football teams.  Bob was a devoted St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan, but an even bigger fan of his grandchildren's sporting events and their many other passions.

He faced the many challenges of life with courage, dignity and determination.  He was a best friend to many, a father figure to several, and loved by so many others. He always said the downside to living so long was to experience the heartbreak of losing so many friends and family members.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 19th from 9 am – 11 am at the Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains, with a funeral service starting at 11 am.  Inurnment will follow at Pleasant Plains Cemetery.  A celebration of life will be held from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at The Grainery in Pleasant Plains.

Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Jude's Children Hospital or to Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains.  Condolences may be expressed online at www.parkfuneralhomesinc.com
