Robert E. "Bob" Gilbert, 98, of Chatham, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Villas of South Park.

Bob was born on November 18, 1918 in Peoria the son of Enoch and Laura Jones Gilbert.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII where he was an Ophthalmologist.  He later was a partner with Shiave Optical and owned and operated Gilbert Optical for many years.  He was a volunteer for Adult Literacy Program for 20 years and a tutor at the county jail.  He was a member of the American Numismatic Society.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Shirley Klint and Betty Gobble.

He is survived by nephews, Edward Klint of Cincinnati, OH and William Klint of Troy OH; several great nieces and great nephews.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail will conduct honors.
