Richard Roy Metcalf, 86, of Rochester, Illinois passed away peacefully on May 21, 2024 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
Richard was born on June 18, 1937 in Chicago, the eldest son of Roy and Dorothy Metcalf. He married Frances Sue Moore on October 16, 1965. The two enjoyed 56 years of marriage. He is survived by sons Ralph and Marshall (Jean) Metcalf and three grandchildren as well as three brothers, James, Steve, and David. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances, sister Judy, brother William, and both parents.
Richard graduated from Tilden Technical High School in Chicago. He attended the University of Illinois Chicago, served two years in the US Army as a draftsman, and completed his Bachelors of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After several years as a consultant engineer he joined the Illinois Department of Transportation, spending the majority of his career in planning. He retired as Land Acquisition Engineer for District 6. He completed a Masters of Public Administration at Sangamon State University during his career.
Richard maintained many hobbies through his life. He was a league golfer and bowler, achieving a 300 game in the mid 1980's. He was an avid photographer. He pursued woodworking, particularly after retirement. While he made many commissioned pieces of furniture he was most proud of the working furniture he crafted for his and his family's use. He was a member of Rochester United Methodist Church.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 10:00AM at Wilson Park Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St. in Rochester. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Springfield.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Rochester United Methodist Church. Wilson Park Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St. in Rochester is in charge of arrangements.
