In Loving Memory of Senior Master Sergeant Richard Lee Leonard, USAF (Retired) With honor, love, and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Senior Master Sergeant Richard Lee Leonard, United States Air Force (Retired), who passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, in Brenham, Texas, where he resided with his son Parrish "Mike" Leonard and daughter-in-law Kami Leonard. Born on December 13, 1940, in Springfield, Illinois, Richard led a life dedicated to service, family, and country. He proudly served over 27 years in the United States Armed Forces, beginning with 6 years in the U.S. Navy and continuing with 21 years in the U.S. Air Force. His military career spanned both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, during which he was honored with numerous awards and decorations, including: - Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal- Vietnam Service Medal- National Defense Service Medal- Meritorious Service Medal These commendations reflect Richard's unwavering commitment, courage, and excellence in defending the freedoms we cherish. After his retirement, Richard returned home to Dawson, Illinois, where he lived with his beloved wife, Janelle Heckwine Leonard, until her passing. He then moved to Brenham, Texas, for the final chapter of his life, where he enjoyed car shows, cruising, and the occasional trip to the horse track. He was known for his strong character, quick wit, and deep devotion to those he loved. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William Donald Leonard and Dorothy Lorein Leonard, his wife Janelle Heckwine Leonard, and siblings Marilyn Leonard, Michael Leonard, Harry Leonard, and Molly Leonard Smith. He is survived by his siblings, Shirley Pickel, Fred Leonard, Lee Anne Ross, and Steve Leonard; his children Tammy and Pete Hill, Ricky and Tammy Leonard, Parrish "Mike" and Kami Leonard, Charri and TJ Jung, and Shane and Prissy Leonard; and stepchildren Sherry "SherBear" Gabbard, Jerry "Leroy" Howell, Harry "Chip" and Mindie Howell, and Tiffiney and Tony Phythrech. He also leaves behind 23 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and his loyal companion Wrigly. Richard's life was a shining example of duty, honor, and love. He touched countless lives and left a legacy of strength, generosity, and patriotism that will never be forgotten. A visitation and funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025 from 5:00-7:00PM at Fullenwider-Park Funeral Home, 200 S. Church St. Mechanicsburg, IL.
