Melvin Eugene White

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Melvin Eugene White, 89, of Springfield, died on Monday, July 6, 2015, at his residence.

Melvin was born March 16, 1926, in Effingham, Ill., the son of Chester and Anna Williams White. He married Elizabeth L. Earl on April 16, 1955, in Broadalbin, N.Y.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy retiring in 1977 after 27 years of service. He was a volunteer Lay Minister at the various area nursing homes and a Lay Minister for a number of years at the Presbyterian Church in Altamont. He also volunteered for Cadence International Mission to the Military. He was a member of Southern View Chapel and was an avid golfer, enjoyed square dancing and loved his church and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Springfield; son, David (Ronda) White of Springfield; daughter, Sue (Allen) Alexander of Springfield; brother, Ronald (Barbara) White of Effingham; three sisters: Delores (Carl) Lucas of Tolono, and Una (Delano) Tish of St. Elmo; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2015, at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be private at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct honors.

Memorial services will be at a later date.
