John H. Smith, 82, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL.

John was born in Springfield on November 1, 1943, the son of William Marcus and Christina (Keller) Smith. John retired after working for REM Systems in Pennsylvania for many years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading and feeding the birds and the squirrels.

John is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Joyce Nelson Smith; one sister, Charlotte Schmidt: and two brothers, Bill and Dan Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Smith; stepchildren, Thomas R. (Cameron) Toal; Cynthia Dawn (James) Gwynn, and Geoffrey (Francine) Martin; 4 grandchildren, James and Lily Gwynn and Caroline and Theresa Martin; as well as 7 nieces and 3 nephews.

Graveside services will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery on Thursday, September 17, 2026 at 12:00PM where John will receive military honors.
