John R. King, 70, of Rochester, Illinois passed away on Friday May 2, 2025. John was born in Valparaiso, Indiana on April 14, 1955 the son of James and Betty (Reynolds) King.
As a young man, John spent a large portion of his childhood education at the Glenwood Military Academy in Glenwood, Illinois. After graduating from high school John went on to enlist in the United States Airforce from 1976 to 1980. For a time, John spent many years in San Diego California, a place he was still very fond of. After moving back to Illinois, John worked for Mitsubishi in Normal for many years. He later retired from the State of Illinois.
John married his wife, Jennifer in Springfield on June 28, 2014 and she survives him. The couple settled in Rochester and remains here to this day. John enjoyed being active; running and competing in everything from marathons to 5K's. He was a huge fan of sports but especially Illinois State University and the Rochester Rockets. In the summer he could be seen tending his tiki bar at his pool welcoming his family.
John loved being a family man, especially taking pride in being a father and a PawPaw.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bob King and Gregory King; one sister, Karen Shidler; and two grandchildren, Grace Abbott and Nolan Piper.
John is survived by his wife, Jennifer Ann (Martin) King of Rochester; children, Heather Luther of Wilson, NC, Amanda (Rich) Abbott of Crestview, FL, Ryan (Shannon) King of Bloomington; step children, Corey (Clinton) Moore of Chatham and Jocelyn (Troy) Piper of Springfield; grandchildren, Justyn, Jacob, Josslyn, Dylan, Ellie, Colton, Riley, Jaimee, Francis, and Oaklynn; brother, Mike King and several nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday May 11, 2025 at Springfield Bible Church, 2060 Westchester Blvd, Springfield, IL 62704 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday May 12, 2025 at the Church at 10:30am. Burial will take place at 12:00pm at Camp Butler National Cemetery where John will receive Military Honors.
