November 16, 1944 – December 11, 2021

John Thomas Hartwig (77) passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

John was born in Decatur, IL on November 16, 1944 to Russell and Fern (Bramel) Hartwig, the 7th of seven children.  He was a graduate of Mt. Auburn High School, in Mt. Auburn, IL.

During and after high school, John worked on his family's farm near Mt. Auburn, then was  employed at the Illinois Secretary of State in Springfield, IL for the next 21 years, retiring in 2004.  John was an ardent St. Louis Cardinals fan, a Ford loyalist (beginning with a new white high performance 1965 Mustang), and was a frequent visitor of Kentucky Fried Chicken and Wendy's. He also loved his extended family.

John was preceded in death by his parents - Russell & Fern Hartwig; brothers - George (Maxine) Hartwig, Richard (Norma, living) Hartwig, Jack (Marilyn) Hartwig; and sisters - Alice (John) Kreig, Marcella (Rodney) Thomas, Marilyn (Don) Gideon.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, December 17, 2021 at Berea Church Cemetery in Mt. Auburn.

John's nieces and nephews would like to thank the medical staff at Taylorville Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care they provided John prior to his death, and all his friends who brought much joy into John's life.  John was a good man and will be missed by many. Memorial Donations are not requested.
