Obituary

Helen Frances Moffitt, 94, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at her residence.

Helen was born on February 25, 1922 in Decatur the daughter of Harrison and Oma Underwood Nihiser. She married Phillip J. Moffitt December 25, 1943; he preceded her in death in May 1996

She was welder on the West Coast working on ships during WWII.  One of the ships she worked on was the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Enterprise, the most decorated ship in WWII history.  She cleaned houses for many years and also continued working until the age of 90 retiring from Qucksilver Mailing Services.  She was a member of Eastview Baptist Church, SilverSneakers Fitness Program at Fit Club and loved her dog, Iffy.

He was also preceded in death by her daughter, Debbie Carmichael; two sisters, Mae Boyer and Marie Morris; and one brother, Edward Nihiser.

She is survived by two sons, Larry P. Moffitt of Springfield; and Jerry D. (Christine) Moffitt of Lonedell, MO; one brother, Lloyd (Doris) Nihiser of MI; one sister, Evelyn White of Springfield; two grandchildren, Jodi C. (Joe) Marks of Glen Carbon and Jason P. (Tara) Moffitt of Buford, SC; four great grandchildren, Jacob and Kate Moffitt and Tucker and Ava Marks; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home with Reverend Tommy Waters officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
