Obituary

Floyd Glenn Matthews, 96, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Heritage Health Hospice.

Glenn was born on January 19, 1922 in Mechanicsburg, the son of Floyd Jefferson and Maud Jane Roberts Matthews.  He married Elsie Lorraine Anderson on November 23, 1942; she preceded him in death.

Glenn was a 1st Lieutenant, in the US Army, 6th Ranger Battalion serving in the South Pacific during WWII on New Guinea, Philippines and the occupation of Japan.  He earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge; Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon with three campaign stars and Bronze arrowhead; Philippine Liberation with two bronze stars; American Theatre Campaign Ribbon; and a Victory Medal

He worked as a Foundry Manager Trainee for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria from 1946-48.  He co-owned and operated Matthews Brothers General Contractors which later became Matthews Construction Company from 1948-1998. Glenn was also co-owner and operator of Matthews Brothers Equipment Company and Greene Matthews, Inc.  He was a member of St. Andrew's Society of Central Illinois.  He was a longtime member and very frequent attendee of the daily morning meeting at Rochester Subway of the "Rochester Liars Club", so dubbed by deceased member, Jim Waters, where the world's problems are solved on a daily basis.  In retirement he enjoyed making whimsical hand carved canes to entertain his friends and family.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Bruce W. Matthews; brothers, Herbert and Wesley Matthews; and sister, Jean Wycoff.

He is survived by companion, Pauline Denzer; children, Glennea "Gleni" Lehman, Gary L. (Cheryl), David A. (Jodi), and Dale B. (Patty J.) Matthews and Mary A. (Charles R.) Waugh; grandchildren, Karen (Todd) Lehman See, Chad (Amanda), and Casey (Tiffany) Matthews, Crystal (Ron) Hull, Amara, Jason S., Lindsay, and Caleb Matthews, Amber (Steven) Matthews Rogne, Rachel (Theodore "Ted") Alvia; step-grandchildren, Carriann (Jeff) Dahlkamp, Matthew (Hannah), Kathryn, Sarah and Jack Waugh great-grandchildren, Victoria "Tori" See, Trent, Devon Bailey, and Cody Matthews, Piper Hull and Oscar and Freja Rogne; step-great-grandchildren, Emma Dahlkamp and Zoey Waugh one great-great-grandchild, Happy Noah Matthews; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Wilson Park Funeral Home in Rochester.  Funeral services at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the funeral home with Reverend Mike Koschmann officiating.  Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
