George Phelps "Phil" Sheller

SPRINGFIELD - George Phelps "Phil" Sheller, 86, of Springfield, and formerly of Illiopolis, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born on January 6, 1927, in Decatur, the son of George W. and Nancy G. Phelps Sheller. He married Barbara L. Leigh on March 22, 1951, in East Lynn, Ill. George was a lifelong farmer and drove the Illiopolis school bus for 32 years. He was a member of the Illiopolis United Methodist Church, and past chairman of the church board. He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II and was a member of the Illiopolis American Legion Post. He was past president of the Riverside Cemetery Board.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Natlie Carpenter. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Springfield; two sons, David Sheller of Houston, Texas, and Dr. Donald Sheller (wife, Dr. Christine Kancius) of Morton; three grandchildren, Stephen, Scott, and Andy Sheller; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 27, from 9 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. at the Illiopolis United Methodist Church with Reverend C. W. "Butch" Reneker officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery at Illiopolis. Memorial contributions may be made to the Illiopolis United Methodist Church.
