George Allen Gates, 69, of Pleasant Plains, IL passed away at his home on Friday December 30, 2022. George was born in Springfield, IL on January 27, 1953 and was the son of George C. and Dorothea L. (McKenzie) Gates.

In his youth he served in both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army. After his service in the military he became a welder for Fiatallis in Springfield and Meteer Manufacturing in Athens.

George was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Keith A Saunders.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Jean (Hogan) Gates; children, Kerrie Saunders (wife, Lisa), Stephanie Price (husband, Jon), Christopher Gates (companion, Raquel Woodward); 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and sister, Connie Teel (husband, Terry).

George was a man of few words. He loved his family and his work.

Cremation services will be accorded through Ellinger-Kunz and Park Funeral Home.

Graveside services are being held at Camp Butler National Cemetery (5063 Camp Butler Rd, Springfield, IL 62707) on Tuesday January 10, 2023 at 12:00 Noon. Military Honors will be held at the cemetery. Those wishing to attend the services need to arrive at 11:40am or after. Services will begin promptly at 12:00pm.
