Fred E. Hagen, 88, of Pleasant Plains, IL passed away on December 15, 2023 at Memorial Medical Center with his family by his side in Springfield.
Fred was born on July 2, 1935, in Springfield, IL. He was the son of Elwill and Pauline (Jokisch) Hagen. Fred graduated from Pleasant Plains High School in 1953. On November 6, 1955, Fred embarked on a lifelong journey with Shirley Jackson. Together, they celebrated 68 years of marriage on November 6, 2023.
Fred began work at an early age in the family business, Hagen Implement, continuing his career at Roland Machinery, Novenco in Springfield and concluded his career as a realtor for the Julie Davis Group and later the Coldwell Banker Group.
He was also involved with several local organizations in the surrounding community for many years. The closest to his heart was his time with the Pleasant Plains Fire Protection District as a volunteer fireman. He also served on the Pleasant Plains Village Board as a trustee and a trustee for Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains.
Fred is survived by his wife, Shirley Hagen; two daughters Cindy Gumbel (Pat McDowell) of Savoy, Illinois and Kim Hagen Rapp of Longmont, Colorado; grandsons Justin (Andrea) Gumbel of Sun Prairie, WI, Dr. Jason Gumbel of San Francisco, CA, Christopher (Kennedey) Rapp of Wheat Ridge, CO, and Andrew Rapp of Arvada, CO; great granddaughters, Ainsley and Brenna Gumbel of Sun Prairie, WI; sister, Jean (John) Machen of Marietta, GA; loving grandpuppy and popcorn buddy, Ozzie; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He was a friend of children and animals, a conservationist, a hobbyist carpenter, and always fixing things. He loved his family above all else. Some of his fondest memories were of watching the grandsons grow up playing at the cottage on Sunset Lake in Girard, IL.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church (525 N Cartwright St, Pleasant Plains, IL 62677) from 10:00am till the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Farmington Cemetery. Rev. Don Pritchard will be officiating.
