Frances Sue Metcalf, 87, of Rochester, Illinois passed away peacefully on December 3rd, 2021 at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville..
Frances was born on September 20, 1934 on her parent's farm in Quitman, Mississippi, the daughter of William Amos and Frances Eulalia Moore. She married Richard Metcalf on October 16, 1965. The two enjoyed 56 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband Richard, sons Ralph and Marshall (Jean) Metcalf, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert and both her parents.
Her family relocated to Springfield, Illinois in 1941 to find work at the Sangamo Electric Company. They then relocated to Rochester in 1944. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1952, and subsequently graduated with a teaching degree in Home Economics from Illinois Women's College in Jacksonville, Illinois. She was proud of working her way through school after the loss of her father in 1952, working as a dental assistant and dining hall waitress during the school year and as a counselor and cook at Camp Widjiwagan Girl Scout Camp in Springfield. Following graduation, she taught at Greenview and Riverton High Schools. She retired from teaching to raise her family and care for her mother.
Frances had a life long interest in sewing, and beginning with her son Ralph's participation created many Madrigal costumes for Rochester High School students. She was an active participant in Rochester United Methodist Church and several Home Economics professional organizations. Private services will be held with Pastor Brian Caughlan officiating and burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rochester United Methodist Church.
Wilson Park Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St. in Rochester, is in charge of arrangements.
