Obituary

Born on March 24, 1941, in Abbyville, Kansas, Duane grew up with strong Midwestern roots and carried those values with him throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Winona High School (Class of 1959) and later earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Sangamon State University. Over the years, he made his home in Winona, KS; Springfield, IL; Wichita, KS; and ultimately Matthews, NC.

A devoted Christian and member of First Baptist Matthews, Duane lived his faith through service, kindness, and generosity. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a dedicated family man, and someone who never met a stranger—always ready for a conversation, a helping hand, or a good story.

Duane’s passions were many. He was a skilled handyman who loved helping others, a lifelong woodworker, and an enthusiastic numismatist who was active in numerous coin clubs. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball. Above all, he will be remembered for his generosity of both time and resources, his deep love for Jesus, and the unwavering devotion he showed to his family.

Duane is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Maude Higgins; his son, Jeff Higgins (Carole); and his grandchildren, Ryan Higgins, Mary Theisen (Daniel), and Samantha Cox (Randy). He also leaves behind two great grandchildren, Parker and Jacob Cox.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Inez Higgins, his sister, Glenna Friesen, and his brother, Manley Higgins.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Matthews or to a charity of your choice.
