David Max Hood, 80, of Rochester, IL passed away on April 16, 2026 in Springfield.
David was born on September 15, 1945 in Charleston, IL the son of Max and Ruth (Pierce) Hood.
He was enlisted in the United States Airforce from 1965 to 1969, where he proudly served his country. On October 17, 1970, he married Shirley Davis and they were married for more than 55 years.
He was extremely kind and compassionate to his friends and family and loved to serve his community. He was a member of the Rochester Rescue Squad and a Deacon of the Rochester First Baptist Church, where Shirley and he attended. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason.
David was a wonderful man. During the Christmas season, he would occasionally dress up as Santa Claus for his friends and family. At work, he was known affectionately as “Big Dog”, a name people still remember to this day.
David enjoyed crossword and sudoku puzzles and was passionate about bowling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dianne Earnhart.
David is survived by his wife, Shirley Hood of Rochester; children, Lance (Tracey) Hood of Springfield, Eric (Alba) Hood of California, and Julie (Matthew) Greer of California; seven Grandchildren, two Great Grandchildren; sisters, Nancy (Jim) Damron of Texas and Robin Hood (Roger) of Neoga, IL; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be held on Friday April 24, 2026 at Wilson Park Funeral Home, 200 East Main Street, Rochester, IL 62563 from 10:00am till the time of the Funeral Service at 11:30am. David will be laid to rest at Camp Butler National Cemetery at 1:00pm with Military Funeral Honors following the services in Rochester.
