Harlan “Gene” Powell, 83, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Concordia Village.

Harlan was born on June 9, 1934 in Athens, the son of Amos and Daisy Litherland Powell.  He married Mary Howard on September 12, 1959 in Springfield.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.  He worked construction and received a 50 year commemoration to Local 477. He also worked for Southard Tree service.  He loved watching NASCAR and western movies while throwing back a beer. He admired all of nature and being outdoors.  He had birds and squirrels in which he fed.  He enjoyed having Sunday brunch followed by an afternoon drive with family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Tom, Joe, Chester, Bob, Homer, Cecil, Minnie, Fannie, Joyce and Dorothy.

He is survived by wife, Mary Powell of Springfield; daughter, Sharon (companion, Robert Simmons) Powell of Goreville; brother, David Powell of Williamsville; granddaughter, Jamie Powell of Springfield; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be accorded.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home with Reverend David Gessaman officiating.
