Carl Husted Obituary

Carl Edward Husted, 64, of Springfield, IL passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center.

Carl was born April 5, 1954 in Springfield, IL the son of Edward P. Husted and Rosemary Howard Husted.

Carl grew up in Mount Sterling and graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1972. He was retired from working at IDOT in Springfield.

He had a big personality and loved to talk. He was handsome, kind, quick with a joke and had mischievous blue eyes. He enjoyed many activities from goose hunting in Southern Illinois, coin collecting, playing cards, calling in turkeys and fishing with his dad on Marco Island. He made a yearly trip to Goose Pond, AL for golfing with some of his many friends and also reserved many Friday evenings for golf. He loved football, especially his favorite team, the Vikings. Carl was a fan of harness horse racing from an early age as his father owned several race horses and a trip to the track was a family event. He never missed the Illinois State Fair harness races and the grandstand section QQ was his favorite seat. He followed the career of his nephew Kyle Husted who is a successful young harness horse driver. Carl had many friends who truly thought of him as a brother. He enjoyed the companionship of his two dogs Spooky and Casper.

Carl earned his nickname “Hammer” by operating a jackhammer working for IDOT. He was severely injured working on a highway bridge crew when a semi driver ran over him after striking four other trucks. He endured many months in the hospital, but learned to walk again, relearned how to swing a golf club and after three years returned to work at IDOT in the highway sign department.

To honor Carl’s memory, we would ask that you do this: Think of him when you pass by highway workers in work zones. Please use caution, slow down and be respectful. Your actions will save lives.

Survivors include, his mother Rosemary Husted of Warsaw; two daughters, Christy (Ian) Anderson of Chandler, AZ; Mellissa (Mike) Shannon of Aurora; one grandson, Lucas Anderson of Chandler, AZ; three brothers, Harry (Charlotte) Husted of Marco Island, FL; Hayes (Betty) Husted of Beardstown; Brian Husted of Mount Sterling; three sisters, Elizabeth (Sonny) Buchanan; Sandy (Steve) Quinn of Mount Sterling; Rita (Mike) Ikerd of Warsaw as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Karen Henrick.

Per his request, cremation has been accorded and a memorial visitation was held on Friday June 15, 2018 at Wilson Park Funeral home in Rochester, IL. Condolences may be expressed online at wilsonparkfuneralhome.com
