Susan Elaine (Dorton) Schownir

Susan Elaine Schownir, 66, of Springfield, formerly of Huntington, Indiana, passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, March 13, 2023 at her home. Susan was born on August 22, 1956, in Hartford City, IN, the daughter of Kenneth L. and Margaret (Herd) Dorton. She married Peter Schownir on June 20, 1981 in Hartford City and he survives. Susan attended Blackford County High School and graduated in 1974 before going on to Ball State University to get her degree in Elementary Education. She later attended Huntington University in 2009 to earn her Master’s Degree in Education. Susan worked as an Elementary School Teacher for Blackford County Schools, Polk County (FL) Schools, and Huntington County Community Schools until her retirement in May 2019. She also tutored students while staying home with her children for 11 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Susan is survived by her husband, Peter; children: son, Matthew (Aaron) of Springfield; daughter, Melissa of Fort Wayne, IN. Grandchildren, Remington and Adinia, of Springfield; sisters Carol Ann (Robert) Fuller of Coopersville, MI; Nancy Sutton of Pendleton, IN, and brother Kenneth (Cathy) Dorton of  LaGrange, NC, plus several nieces and nephews.  

Private family services will be held and burial will be at Rochester Cemetery in Rochester, IL. A memorial service will be held on April 22 at 1:00pm (EDT) at First Peter's First Community Church in Huntington, IN.
