Alice June Garren, 93, of rural Springfield, Illinois passed on to her heavenly home on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at her residence.
June, as she was affectionately known, was born on July 22, 1929 at home in Roby, Christian County, Illinois the daughter of Albert Homer and Alice Marticia Moore Patton. She married the late Roland Eugene “Rod” Hawk at an early age and three precious daughters were born of that union before the marriage ended in divorce. She later married the “love of her life” James William Garren on January 20, 1951 in Pocahontas, Randolph County, Arkansas and they cherished their 71 years together. Jim survives to mourn her loss.
June was an accomplished and entertaining beautician for many, many years and made numerous life-long friends throughout her career. She enjoyed singing, dancing, sewing, crafting, gardening, playing the piano/organ, playing poker, fishing, camping, creating stained glass masterpieces, oil painting landscapes and wall murals, writing poetry and visiting with family and friends. Most of all, she loved to laugh and to make everyone around her laugh. She was also an excellent cook and made the best homemade chicken and (bumpy) noodles! She was a beautiful woman, inside and out, with a strong love for God and family – she will be missed beyond measure, until we can meet again.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Connie Jeanne Hawk, six full siblings (Gladys, Grace, Goldie, Dave, Lindy, and Jerry), nine half-siblings (Letha, Verne, Harry, Chester, Roy, Ruth, Mary, Floyd and Ray), three nieces, and her canine “children”: Sonny, Snoopy, Missy, Red, Betsy and Buffy.
In addition to her husband, Jim, she is survived by: one brother, Wade Patton (wife Teresa) of Dawson, Illinois, sister-in-law, Judy Patton of Rochester, Illinois, brother-in-law, Charles Garren of Mechanicsburg, Illinois, two daughters, Dr. Patricia Anne Hawk Schechter (husband Dr. Robert Jay Schechter) of Atascadero, California, and Linda Sue Hawk (husband, Dwight) Ridgely of Decatur, Illinois, four grandchildren, Aaron (wife Carrie) Schechter, David (wife Cynthia) Schechter, Joseph (wife Briana) Schechter and Naomi Schechter (husband Chance) Waak, ten great-grandchildren (Isaac, Eva, Judah, Liam, Abigail, Evan and Amelia Schechter, Wyatt, Drake and Nolan Waak), and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and their descendants.
Per June’s wishes, there will be no services. Cremation will be accorded and interment will be at a later date in Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, Illinois. Please make any memorial contributions to: Animal Protective League, 1001 Taintor Road, Springfield, IL 62702.
